Little Bighorn Battlefield

July 20th:  I added another state (Montana).  We left Sheridan, Wyoming and crossed into Montana this morning.  After visiting the Little Bighorn Battlefield near Billings, Montana, we headed West to Livingston.  On to Yellowstone tomorrow.

Replica of Custer's last stand in the Visitor's Center,
After the battle, the remains were buried by the survivors of the 7th calvary in shallow graves.  In different areas of the battlefield, remains were identified and names written on a small piece of paper, rolled in an empty bullet shell case, and attached to the top of a sticks where the soldier fell.  Later permanent markers were put in place of the sticks.  It gives you a picture of how many soldiers were killed and where.  It was around 5 miles from the South end to the North end of the entire battlefield.

Later the remains buried in the shallow graves were all gathered and put in a common grave site underneath this memorial.  Approximately 220 men were killed.  A memorial was also erected in memory of the many horses that were killed.  Custer's remains were shipped back East and buried at West Point.
