Tobasco Plant & Oil Rigs

We are in the great state of Louisiana attending an RV rally with Adventure Caravans. The city of Houma is about an hour SW of New Orleans.  Lots of great food, music, and tours of the area.

Avery Island, home of the Tabasco Plant.  Edmund Mclihenny received  a special variety of red capsicum pepper seeds from Central America as a gift from a friend shortly after the Civil War and developed the fiery Tabasco brand pepper sauce that is still produced on Avery Island by his descendants.   After the peppers are harvested and blended, the mixture is aged in oak barrels for 3 years before it's bottled for consumption.  We got a tour of the plant although it was a Saturday and the plant was not operating.

Jungle Gardens on Avery Island.

The highlight of this trip was getting a tour of an oil rig in Morgan City.  This rig is the oldest one built in the early 1950's.  It's attached to land and is used as a training facility for employees before they are assigned to an operating rig in the Gulf.  Operating rigs have close to 300 employees and are equipped with movie theatres, exercise rooms, and a dining hall that's open 24 hours a day.
