Plantations and Aligators

Shadows-on-the-Teche is a mansion built in 1834 by David Weeks. (New Iberia)   He died before the mansion was finished.  His wife ended up managing the sugar cane plantation even after she eventually remarried.  Teche is the name of the river that the mansion was built on.

We had a great time taking a tour of the swamp.  This tour guide was a real character.  He drove us up into a cove, shut down the boat, then started calling the alligators.  He kept saying that the alligators probably would not come out due to the fog, but one huge male about 12 feet long and 2 females came up to the boat.  Of course the raw chicken he enticed them with helped.

Touring an alligator farm was very interesting.  They raise the young ones until they're 4 1/2 feet then process them for both the meat and the skins.
